Blooming Tulips

Last week was extremely frustrating for me, as I had no access to the internet due to some technical problems with the connection. Finally its all sorted and I am back on track. Mean while, I thought of trying my hands on oils. Here I am sharing my first ever attempt with oil.
Acrylics and watercolors are the mediums that I worked with, but stayed away from oils.Actually, there are several reasons behind this.Firstly,I had no formal training and had no idea how to go about it.I did follow some videos, sites and some articles about oil painting but,the more I read them, more confused I got. What I knew about oils was that, they take a longer time to dry and cleaning brushes after their use was also a crucial part and I realized that this could be a troublesome job for a lazy bug like me.:) But still, gave it a try and let me tell you my patience really got tested(is it that use of acrylics made me impatient?).
Well, talking about the above painting,I am nor very sure about the result but somewhere within ,there is a sense of dissatisfaction.I did not like the way I painted the red tulips but then, did not want to overdo anything, as a disastrous first attempt can leave a deep impact and I don't want this piece to be my first and last attempt with oils.Would definitely like to work more with oils to improve myself, but how often I would do so?Not sure.
Any suggestion would be highly appreciated.:)

  1. As with anything worthwhile having, Yasha, there must be an element of patience, practice, trial and error. This was a big undertaking for your first oil painting. I would try painting single tulips or other flowers in a simple setting to get the hang of how your paints flow and your style with oil.
Look forward to seeing the next one.

  2. Hi Yasha, this definitely will not be your last attempts at oil paintings. the painting is good. I agree with you, red tulips are not as good as yellow tulips, nevertheless, the painting is good overall. Considering that you are not formlly trained in oil painting, you must be proud of yourself for taking the effort to learn from videos and other sources and trying to oil paint. Good luck. Looking forward to seeing more oil paintings from you.

    Cheers
    Always Happy

  3. Yasha, Try oil pastels; maybe that would help the impatient side of you. I am impatient also and painted a little with oils 20 years ago; their drying time drove me crazy. When I started painting again in 2004, there was no question; it was watercolors for me.

  5. The best item of oil painting equipment is the Holbein brush cleaner. It works very well to clean brushes while you paint, so little or no brush cleaning is needed afterward, and it further solves the problem of storing your solvent (gamsol or turpentine) so it doesn't spill and you can reuse it. So get one of those if you can. Because oil stays wet, it's more important to paint in order, dark first and then light. I personally think oils generally make more beautiful paintings than acrylics because they are more transparent and they blend into nice edges and have more of a glow. Your painting is a beautiful first oil painting.

  8. Yasha, I read your blog entry yesterday but this is the first I got to type my reply. I think this painting is just wonderful, and I applaud you for going outside your comfort zone & trying oils. I use to work in oils - gave them up a few years ago to take on acrylics. I may go back to oils again one day, I do like their look & feel. There's a richness to their colors - which I can see in your painting. I hope to see more oil work from you, I think you will find a comfort zone with them, as well as with acrylics - and you'll be equally good with them both!
